Understanding the Law of Dismissal & Employment Termination

Termination Management: Understanding Employment Laws and Procedures in Singapore

The ability to manage employees’ termination is paramount to building an effective workforce in the organization. Unfair termination practices can lead to lower employee morale, affect performances, damage Company’s image and often subject the organization to unnecessary legal disputes. With the amendment of the Employment Act during the last five years, among others, greater protection has been accorded to pregnant employees, professionals, managers and executives (whose basic salaries are not more than $4,500) from unfair termination of employment. In 2009, a new definition of the term “dismiss” has now greater implications for employers in termination cases. It is therefore important and timely for employers to have a better handle on the various laws on termination, dismissal and retrenchment- including common law principles.
