Insights on Heat Stress Management at Workplaces by Mr Ee Loon Shin, Senior Specialist (Occupational Hygiene) OSH Specialist Department, Ministry of Manpower (MOM)
With rising temperature which put our workers at an increased risk of heat stress, workplaces will have to step up on the preventive measures to keep their workers safe. This presentation will provide insights to the implementation of Heat Stress Management Programme at workplaces, the common gaps and areas of improvement on the control measures observed. The importance of monitoring Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) at workplaces as part of risk assessment will also be emphasized. Employers and occupiers will need to take appropriate measures to effectively manage heat stress risks posed to their workers.

Managing Heat Stress & Haze Situation: From Compliance to Prevention by Mr Allan Low, Director Corporate QEHS, Deputy Construction Director, Teambuild Engineering & Construction Pte Ltd
Heat stress and haze are significant workplace health and safety concerns, particularly for construction site. While regulatory compliance is essential, effective management requires a proactive approach that prioritises prevention, risk assessment, and worker well-being.
This topic explores the transition from compliance-based measures to preventive strategies for managing heat stress and haze. It highlights the importance of implementing appropriate control measures such as monitoring environmental conditions, providing adequate hydration and ensuring proper use of personal protective equipment. The presentation will also share on the approach how to address the key requirements and potential challenges of heat-related illness and haze exposure.

Understanding Heat Stress: The Science Behind Exposure, Health Risks and Prevention by Prof Marcus Ong, Professor and Director, Health Services and Systems Research (Signature Research Program), Duke-NUS Medical School
This talk explores the science of heat stress and its growing impact on health, work and daily life. We will learn how the human body responds to heat, humidity and physical exertion, and why prolonged exposure can overwhelm normal temperature regulation. We will examine the spectrum of heat-related illness, from heat syncope and heat exhaustion to potentially life-threatening heat stroke, while highlighting key environmental, occupational and individual risk factors. Practical approaches to prevention—including hydration, acclimatisation, work-rest strategies, appropriate clothing , early recognition of warning signs and early treatment will be discussed, equipping participants to reduce heat-related risks and respond effectively in hot environments.
