Understanding NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contracts

Introduction

The NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC) is a collaborative contract form widely used for a variety of construction and engineering projects. It is designed to move away from the traditional, adversarial nature of many older contracts. NEC4's core principle is the promotion of a "spirit of mutual trust and cooperation" between the parties involved. It is distinguished from traditional, more adversarial contracts by its focus on proactive management and shared risk. The contract is written in plain English to reduce ambiguity and legal jargon, making it more accessible to all in the building and construction industry.
